We are in the midst of a massive attack on democracy in this nation. We are being assaulted by an alien force—one that seems intent on destroying the very structures we’ve spent our national life developing and defending. This includes a direct and dangerous assault on the Constitution and the rule of law.
The very nature of democracy—certainly our democracy—is that the citizen is of paramount importance. This nation was built to be a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. But over the years, this founding principle has been nearly lost in the hurly-burly of politics and the overwhelming drive to win, dominate, and control the domestic power structure.
Citizens have too often been ignored—or worse, taken for granted. And over time, their voices have been drowned out by the growing din of political noise and manipulation.
As a result, small groups of elites have found ways to dominate the political process. Most recently, those elites have seized the reins of power with a clear intent: to dismantle the democratic foundations of this nation.
Though the law remains a bulwark, their assault on the legal system has been devastating—casting doubt on legal remedies and hollowing out public trust. Political remedies seem equally impotent, as the party in power shows little desire to serve the nation or restrain the growing power of the executive branch.
At this critical juncture, all that remains is the grit of the individual citizen—the last line of defense. We are called to protect our democracy, our Constitution, and our nation against an enemy that has come from within. An enemy who appears familiar but whose intent is to destroy our institutions, our rule of law, our right to vote—and to replace our democracy with an oligarchic system serving only wealth and power. A system in which citizens are reduced to economic units—used, discarded, and silenced.
This is our moment to step up—to prove our courage and tenacity by standing against this internal threat. The momentum is building, and it begins with us, the citizens.
That momentum will grow as we direct our energy toward preserving our heritage and our democracy. We will find inspiration in public figures like Cory Booker, Bernie Sanders, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez—who have stepped forward to awaken the citizenry. But the true heroes are the ordinary citizens: the ones who roll up their sleeves, work hard, and commit themselves to doing whatever it takes to win this fight.
We are witnessing the emergence of a new “Greatest Generation”—this time battling a more insidious enemy: a homegrown threat, cloaked in familiarity, that seeks to replace democracy with something alien, and fundamentally un-American.
My plan is to write an ongoing series of reflections—offering suggestions on how to continue this fight, how to build coalitions, how to stay inspired, and how to nurture a “coalition of the willing”. Along the way, we may even find reason for celebration—a reminder of what’s possible when people come together with purpose.
Let us begin.
