October 2024
October was unseasonably dry this year, almost drought-like, and no frost yet. But that seems to have produced a lot of color as the trees turned.
The apples have been picked; in fact, we are now down to our last two.
The animal life has changed, not much traffic on our feeder except for the omnipresent finches.
The squirrels are very active with the massive number of acorns from our oak-filled yard. This year there are plenty of the usual chipmunks and grey squirrels, but no longer any red squirrels.
But lately we have black squirrels again.
And, as always, we have gatherings of turkeys. But this year there seems to be a gathering of tom turkeys outside my window every morning as I write.
The gardens are finished.
Except for a few fall bloomers.
And a last burst of red.
And finally, we are left only with the fallen leaves on the ground and on our deck.
My wife and I have spent a fair part of the month slowly recovering from covid and glad now to be on the other side of it.
But we are always kept company by the October moon.
And the river in the fall.
