This is how I developed my perspectives.
I have been watching this nation develop and have experienced the changes that have occurred during that time. Being born just as the U.S. was about to enter World War II, I have lived through the Korean War, Viet Nam, Iraq, Ukraine, the death of FDR, the Atomic Bomb, the McCarthy period, the Kennedy assassination, the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., the assassination of Robert Kennedy, Nixon & Watergate, the protests, Kent State, the Church Committee, Iran-Contra, George W. Bush and scandal, the 2008 economic disaster, the 2016 election, the Covid pandemic, and now Trump and the Insurrection.
I have worked on construction, sold clothes, attended college, worked for the US Department of Health, Education and Welfare (when it was still called that) in New York City, taught high school in Michigan and Minnesota, taught classes at the University of Minnesota, worked as a job transition counsellor, facilitated many workshops, been an empowerment consultant, facilitated foreign policy discussions, presented at many venues, organized conferences for Common Cause and Honeywell. During that time, I have also been involved in politics.
I have lived much of my life in Minnesota but have also spent time in New York City, twelve years in Michigan, eight years in California and have traveled to Canada, Mexico and Europe.
I have been married for 60 years and have 2 successful sons, 2 successful daughters-in-law and 3 grandchildren.
Much of my writing has been published over the past decade including a book, “Saving Democracy: The 2016 Presidential Election”, but I also write poetry and short stories. My major topics are democracy, social and human development, personal empowerment and political dynamics.
My focus has been on the health of democracy, the importance of retaining our humanity, the basic goodness of ordinary people and the need to find sustainable planetary solutions, often focusing on the bigger picture.
With that breadth of experience, I understand context and content and have developed some insights into how human beings operate and how politics works in this nation. The hope is that you will find the perspectives interesting and perhaps helpful in understanding your role in the world and in this nation.
My first addition to substacks will follow and will be about recent political developments that will determine the 2024 presidential election.
I invite you to join in this journey and perhaps subscribe.
