(As I’ve mentioned before, I have this old uncle who lives up in the far north—among the woods and lakes of Minnesota. He keeps track of what’s going on in this country and in the world, and when he gets frustrated enough, he writes one of his “Oh, come on folks!” articles to spell out how we might just tackle the problem head-on.)
Oh, come on, folks!
We all know the first thing you have to do when you run into a problem is accept the reality of the situation. Only then can you even hope to begin finding a solution.
The next step is to understand the full scope of the problem. Then you can start taking stock of your own reality—and the resources you might be able to call on—to begin shaping a workable solution. Only then can you start piecing together a plan and mapping out a strategy to deal with it.
Once that’s done, you can begin to estimate your chances of success and figure out not only how to use your current resources most effectively, but also what additional support you might need to make success possible.
Next, you’ve got to go out and gather the resources needed—or admit that the problem just isn’t solvable right now.
That might lead you to redefine the problem altogether, or to recognize that the situation is too overwhelming for now—and then begin figuring out how to live with that new reality.
It might also mean shifting your energy into building something different. Maybe a better way forward. Maybe something new that actually works.
